Lipoedema Assessment & Management

Lipoedema is a chronic condition involving disproportionate adipose tissue accumulation, typically in the legs and arms. Often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphoedema, this condition requires a targeted clinical approach to manage pain, and mobility challenges.

We provide comprehensive, evidence-based care for those seeking clarity and long-term management strategies.

Our Clinical Approach:

  • Diagnostic Assessment: A thorough clinical evaluation to identify lipoedema symptoms and differentiate from related vascular or lymphatic conditions.
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): Gentle manual therapy to support lymphatic circulation, reduce limb heaviness, and alleviate tissue tenderness.
  • Prescription Compression: Professional measurement and fitting of medical-grade compression garments tailored to your limb shape and comfort.
  • Individualised Exercise Programmes: Guided, low-impact movement plans designed to build functional strength and support vascular health.
  • Weight-Neutral Framework: Size-inclusive, respectful care focused on improving your physical function and quality of life rather than weight-centric metrics.

Targeted Symptom Management

We work with you to address the core symptoms of lipoedema, including:

  • Limb heaviness.
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Persistent discomfort or “aching” in the limbs.
  • Reduced mobility and joint stress.

Vascular Disease (insufficiency) & Mixed Picture Oedema

In collaboration with your medical provider, we provide conservative management for vascular disease and complex swelling. We offer evidence-based physiotherapy to support circulation, improve limb health, and reduce the risk of secondary complications.

  • Vascular Insufficiency: Management of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), focusing on reducing limb heaviness, aching, and skin changes.
  • Mixed Picture Oedema: Targeted care for patients presenting with a combination of venous, lymphatic, and lipoedema-related swelling.
  • Chronic Wound Care: Collaborative management of vascular wounds and venous ulcers, focusing on optimal healing environments and skin integrity.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a clinical lymphatic massage technique designed to physically facilitate the movement of fluid within the body. Rather than a standard remedial massage, MLD is a targeted manual therapy used to move lymphatic fluid away from overloaded or congested areas, assisting in the reduction of limb volume and the improvement of patient comfort.

At our clinic, we provide MLD as a core component of management for:

  • Volume Reduction: Actively moving fluid toward functioning lymphatic pathways to reduce swelling and limb heaviness.
  • Lymphoedema Management: Targeted massage to clear congested tissues and redirect fluid to healthy nodes.
  • Post-Surgical Recovery: Assisting the body in processing post-operative fluid and inflammatory by-products to speed up recovery.
  • Lipoedema Support: Improving tissue comfort and reducing the “pressure” and tenderness associated with lipoedema accumulation.
  • Chronic Oedema: Managing persistent fluid retention related to vascular insufficiency or complex injury.

We integrate MLD into an accredited management plan, ensuring your treatment is supported by evidence-based skin care, exercise, and compression therapy.

We support individuals with a wide range of needs and health backgrounds, particularly those living in larger bodies.

Whatever your reason for coming to us, our focus is in helping you develop safe movement habits through structured exercise plans and habit formation strategies. Together, we’ll work towards your goals of health, function, and confidence at any size.
