What is Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a chronic swelling condition caused by a problem with the lymphatic system. When the lymphatic system is damaged or not working effectively, lymph fluid can build up in the tissues under the skin, leading to persistent swelling, heaviness, and tissue changes.

Lymphoedema most commonly affects the arm or leg, particularly after cancer treatment, but it can also occur in other areas of the body such as the breast, chest wall, or abdomen. It may develop gradually and can range from mild to more significant swelling over time.

There are two main types of lymphoedema:

  • Primary lymphoedema – caused by developmental differences in the lymphatic system
  • Secondary lymphoedema – caused by damage, blockage, or disruption to the lymphatic system

Risk Factors for Lymphoedema

  • Surgery involving lymph node removal or disruption (higher risk with greater number of nodes removed)
  • Radiation therapy to lymph node regions
  • Cancer or tumours affecting lymph nodes or lymphatic vessels
  • Chemotherapy treatments, particularly taxane-based chemotherapy
  • Previous episodes of cellulitis or infection in a limb
  • Injury or trauma affecting lymphatic structures
  • Higher body weight, which increases lymphatic load
  • Reduced physical activity or prolonged immobility
  • Primary lymphoedema (congenital or hereditary lymphatic system differences)
  • Chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis
  • Ageing
  • Venous disease or chronic venous insufficiency, which can contribute to or coexist with lymphoedema
  • Cardiac conditions such as heart failure, where fluid balance is affected is affected and lower limb swelling may be present alongside lymphatic impairment

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a clinical lymphatic massage technique designed to physically facilitate the movement of fluid within the body. Rather than a standard remedial massage, MLD is a targeted manual therapy used to move lymphatic fluid away from overloaded or congested areas, assisting in the reduction of limb volume and the improvement of patient comfort.

At our clinic, we provide MLD as a core component of management for:

  • Volume Reduction: Actively moving fluid toward functioning lymphatic pathways to reduce swelling and limb heaviness.
  • Lymphoedema Management: Targeted massage to clear congested tissues and redirect fluid to healthy nodes.
  • Post-Surgical Recovery: Assisting the body in processing post-operative fluid and inflammatory by-products to speed up recovery.
  • Lipoedema Support: Improving tissue comfort and reducing the “pressure” and tenderness associated with lipoedema accumulation.
  • Chronic Oedema: Managing persistent fluid retention related to vascular insufficiency or complex injury.

We integrate MLD into an accredited management plan, ensuring your treatment is supported by evidence-based skin care, exercise, and compression therapy.
