There is complexity around the definition of a person with a larger body.
There is also distinction between a person in a larger body and the medical condition of obesity.
The World Health Organisation defines obesity as a chronic relapsing disease characterised by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health.
In simplest terms if you feel your size and/or weight impact your life- this may be positively or negatively- we specialise in your care.
Examples may include community/workplace interactions, comfort, mobility and/or requiring specialised health interactions.
For healthcare professionals and services a patients body size can have impacts on clinical resources and ‘usual care’ pathways as these patients may require specialised planning to provide excellent care.
Specialisation means we have a deep understanding of the research literature, potential and common complications associated with excess adipose tissue, specialised equipment and environmental needs as well as professional and community support networks. We have extensive experience effectively working with people in larger bodies.
The right language to use when talking about someones body size is highly personal. If you feel comfortable, and it is appropriate, it is always best to ask a person how they would like to address their size.
As a general guide we should use people first language i.e. A person in a larger body, A patient living with obesity. Large, big or plus size are appropriate layman terms and smaller/straight sized should be used as the comparative.
e.g. I am a person who is large and he is a person who is smaller or straight sized..
Obese is a medical term which is appropriate to be used for communication between healthcare workers where a diagnosis has been made.
Bariatric is a medical term which describes weight loss initiatives such as bariatric surgery or dietetics services specifically aimed at weight loss.
